Click here for more information.The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist provides maintenance and technical support functions for patient care equipment and medical equipment systems. These are defined as life and non-life support equipment used for the diagnosis, treatment, therapy, monitoring, or care of patients. Incumbent performs highly skilled work of considerable complexity, has a comprehensive knowledge of practices, procedures, and types of responsible equipment where specialized training may be required.50% or less - You may be expected to travel for this position.The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3.   • Formulate methods and techniques to perform scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance to assure operational safety of patient related devices.
  • Manages the calibration, repair, and preventative maintenance on complex medical and dental x-ray systems, diagnostic laboratory analyzers, and other patient related systems.
  • Serve as technical advisor and consultant to administrators, Physicians, and other health care professionals in the purchase of new instrumentation.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to entry-level equipment support specialist or administrative support specialist.Must pass pre-employment examination.

    Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation.     Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

    GS-05:
    4-Year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree OR 3 years of General Experience, 1 year of which was equivalent to at least the GS-04 Grade Level. General Experience is defined as demonstrating the ability to analyze problems to identify significant factors, gathering pertinent data, recognizing solutions, planning and organizing work and communicating effectively orally and in writing. Such experience may have been gained in administrative, professional, technical, investigative or other responsible work.

    GS-07:
    1 full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement OR 1 Year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 Grade Level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples include: Testing, repairing, maintaining and documenting of sophisticated medical equipment (i.e., EKGs, Vital Signs Monitors, Dental chairs etc.), ensuring clean, safe and proper function; engineering methods and practices involving mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic, digital, optical and radiological principals.

    GS-09:
    Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related OR 1 Year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 Grade Level. Examples include: Installing, testing, repairing, maintaining and documentation of a variety of medical and dental equipment used for patient diagnoses and treatment; application of mechanical, electrical and electronic principles and circuitry; troubleshooting malfunctions and documenting and communicating results to Healthcare Technology management personnel; Equipment used at this level are electronically sophisticated such as defibrillators and CAT scanners.

    Time In Grade
    Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

    Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

    This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

    This position has promotion potential to the GS-11 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
