Job Description:
Salary range for this position is: $70,000.00 to $80,000.00
Annually and is an Exempt Classification Hours are Monday through
Friday 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, Onsite at the Lab. Job Summary The
Safety Specialist performs clerical and technical duties, provides
guidance and assistance to assure safety of the highest standard at
Summit Pathology. Safety Supervisor works directly under the
Director of Human Resources, but also works closely with Histology,
Cytology, Molecular, Supervisors, Pathologists, the Safety
Committee, other laboratory staff, and members of the health care
team to ensure the safety of Summit Pathology employees and
customers is maintained and in compliance with all safety mandates.
Travel expectations to area partner hospitals to ensure compliance
and be of support. This role is the primary contact for staff
regarding exposure or injury. Duties and Responsibilities Monthly
AET manifests for waste disposal, report out to State of Colorado
Health and Environment in regard to small quantity generation
(SQG), to LQG should we shift to large quantity generation. AED
testing Verify first aid kits are up to date (no expired items) and
properly filled Spill kit review to include formalin/xylene badge
expiration and contents are fully stocked Coordination of monthly
webinar/training from Dan the Lab Safety Man. Must send
communication of webinar and other safety items to Leadership
Replace muster logs monthly Keep chemical inventory list updated on
the Summit Hub Check fire extinguishers and exit signs monthly
Quarterly Safety Committee Meeting Schedule Complete minutes Send
final minutes to Dr. Walts Review department quarterly inspections
(including hospitals) and provide follow up or recommendations for
corrective action. Keep electronic copy on Summit Hub Safety risk
assessment by department Annually CPR training scheduling Fire
extinguisher training Chemical Hygiene Report Annual Summary
Ensuring all new hires are trained in proper donning/doffing of PPE
Annual safety assessment/inspection Annual safety training in
MediaLab Annual OSHA reporting for incidents and exposures Other
Maintains, disposes and tracks Stericycle medical lab waste
Maintains relationships with state and local first response
systems; fire, police, and hospitals within the proximity of MCR.
Weekly eyewash and shower verification with documentation
MSDSonline site administration Ordering safety supplies Printing
and filling eyewash forms Sending xylene/formalin badges for
testing and restocking badges in spill kits Assist with updating
posters in lunchroom, departments, and coordination with hospitals
“Train the trainer” for appropriate use of PPE. This includes
donning/doffing PPE procedure and ensuring training kits are
updated or replace missing items. Assist with complete update of
OSHA safety manual (different that safety manual). Load all
components to MediaLab Keep First report of Injury Instruction
binders up to date in all departments and hospitals. Currently
assisting all departments with updates (pictograms, reagent
location, etc.) in SDS. These are individualized by department
Sanitation log documentation (Landings and hospital facilities)
Ensure all thermometers are calibrated and electronic documentation
is on the Summit Hub Universal Precautions Form documented and
filed for new hires. Upload to Personnel Documentation in MediaLab
Order xylene and formaldehyde badges as needed Send badges to
Sensors Safety if an exposure occurs. Ensure employee is notified
of results and signs off on report upon receipt. New hire safety
orientation Assist hospitals with safety items that fall under
Summit Pathology or follow up with hospital safety
officers/personnel to address issues affecting gross rooms,
pathology suites, or specimen submission Primary contact and answer
general safety questions from Summit Pathology staff and hospital
personnel as needed Annual DI water testing Review and sign off on
chemical or biological spills and keep on file for 2 years.
Document in safety folder on Summit Hub Review and sign off on
safety incident reports and keep on file for 2 years Qualifications
Current qualification in Laboratory Safety (QLS) through ASCP or
the ability to obtain certification within 1 year of hire.
Associate degree or bachelor’s degree Knowledge of handling
chemical and bio-hazardous material Previous experience in a
laboratory or medical settings highly preferred Ability to work
independently Ability to problem solve issues Ability to organize
work and meet deadlines Excellent customer service skills Accuracy
with imputing customer confidential details Ability to maintain
necessary levels of confidentiality to protect patient privacy Core

This position contains the following exposure level: Level IV =
High chemical or physical hazard. This would include Histotechs,
MLT’s, PA’s, grossing techs and any staff that have direct exposure
to hazardous chemicals (formalin, toxic chemicals, etc.) Blood and
other potentially infectious materials. This could include, but is
not limited to: Receiving un-fixed and un-processed specimens
Handling containers filled with hazardous chemicals Potential for
cutting hands on slides and/or sharps All employees must adhere to
Summit Pathology’s PPE policies and procedures when appropriate
